Peace, Love and Winter Whites!

Now that we're squarely in December with shorter days, cold tempatures, gray skies and snow upon us, we thought it was the perfect time of year to pay homage to the color white. Sophisticated, modern and clean.

White rooms are popular no matter where you live.  As you peruse Pinterest, Instagram or popular lifestyle bloggers you will see it everywhere. From crisp white walls, to comfy white sofas, lush shag rugs and the ever so popular sheepskin throws. Whether you like the crisp white vibe or more of the cream and white mix for that tone-on-tone look, you can always find ways to introduce more of it into your living spaces.

And, of course, we know not everyone is ready for a completely white interior—especially if you have little ones or furry friends. But if you like the clean, Scandinavian look, there are some easy ways to pull it off in a vignette or on a smaller scale.  Here are 6 ways to cozy up your space with pretty winter whites.

White Upholstery

You can update a side chair or even a sofa with custom slipcovers. Try crisp or winter white fabric in a heavyweight upholstery like a cotton duck cloth that is highly durable and also washable. If you’re in the market for a new sofa and are willing to commit to white year-round, we love a crisp white tailored sofa for a show-stopping look.

Sheepskin Throws

The plush sheepskin throw is a Decorist favorite and one that we use in many of our own room designs. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, price points and styles. However, winter white is a true classic that delivers texture and warmth in a bedroom, den or even a kitchen. We especially like them draped over a simple hardwood chair for a striking soft-hard contrast.

White Accessories

White pottery and objects are everywhere and chances are you already have quite a few displayed around the house. The trick to pulling off a grouping of white objects is to select contrasting shapes, sizes and textures and even a range of whites and group them closely together on a shelf, coffee table or consol. Even though the look is tonal and minimalistic, the visual impact is quite strong.

Crisp White Walls

Easy to acheieve and always fresh, we love a crisp white wall. A good white paint allows the architecture, furniture and art to be the star of the show. But not just any white. Simply White by Benjamin Moore is a classic and probably our 'go to' when painting a room white. In our recent design project with Erin Heimstra of Apartment 34, we recommended white walls to help set the tone for her Parisian pre-war inspired bedroom.

Shag Rugs

A cozy shag like this Moroccan rug is also another popular look especially if you are going for that Scandinavian boho vibe. The tone and texture add warmth and interest to a room design. Needless to say, we have 6 of them lined up in our Decorist home office. I guess you can say, it is an obsession!

White Bedding

Crisp, clean and classic! White bedding works in almost any bedroom design and is easy to update with new pillows and throws. You can add texture to your white bedding by incorporating nubby knits and faux fur that help usher in a cozy vibe. Don’t get too fixated on matching up your whites—in reality, mixing cool and warm whites such as creams, beiges and winter whites creates an interesting tonal contrast.
