Introducing the First Decorist Design Off!

JUNE 13, 2016

This summer, Decorist designers are teaming up for the launch of our first ever Design Off! Our brilliant Head of Design, Ashley Redmond, and fabulously accomplished designer, Jessica McCarthy, have paired up with two of our favorite style bloggers for an interior design competition you won't want to miss.

Kyla Herbes of House of Hipsters, and Joanna Hawley of Jojotastic, are both settling in to new homes and turned to Decorist for help with their unfinished living rooms. As longtime virtual friends since meeting at the Decorist Seattle Showhouse, we all agreed a little competition for these new home owners would be a lot of fun. We paired Kyla with Ashley, and Joanna with Jessica, and these designers will virtually design two concepts each for their clients' new living rooms. Then, Kyla and Joanna will invite their readers and fans to provide input on which should be the winning design. Two stylish bloggers, two incredible designers... this is about to be good.

Joanna is a first-time homebuyer of a tiny bungalow in Seattle. With a background in design (Anthropologie, Nordstrom, and Blissliving Home), this established and influencial lifestyle blogger has a boho-meets-modern creativity we absolutely love and cannot wait to capture in her living room makeover. As Joanna told Jessica in her questionnaire, her living room has barely been touched since she moved in, making it the perfect canvas for a Decorist design.

Here is a taste of Joanna's vision for her room, straight from her Pinterest board created for the Design Off:

As the room where she spends most of her time - “my desk where I work most days is here!” - Joanna hopes to utilize the abundance of natural light through her set of newly painted black french doors, to create a comfortable and inviting sanctuary that sets the tone for the rest of her new home. When it comes to details, she expressed her desire for lighter colors, clean whites and pale pinks, to open up the cozy room. However, “I’ve really embraced accents of black lately,” she says, and is “also in love with rich tones of peacock and navy blue.” She loves “vintage ethnic patterns (especially rugs), stripes, shibori and dye techniques,” along with marbling, block prints, and mixing fabrics. Well, Joanna, we do too and knowing Jessica, these design concepts are sure to be spot on.

Kyla is in the process of moving her family to a new home in the suburbs of Chicago. Working with our Head of Design, Ashley, is familiar territory for her: these two were paired up for Kyla's guest bedroom makeover just over a year ago. Both share a similar eclectic, whimsical style and passion for flea market and vintage finds. Now Instagram buddies and design BFFs, Kyla is looking for another winner from Ashley: "Decorist was truly a knock-it-out-of-the-park home run'." This is a design power duo, and we couldn't be more excited to see what concepts they collaborate on.

Here is an idea of Kyla's inspiration for her new living room, pulled from her Pinterest board created for the Design Off:
