Behind the Design: Hilary Duff's Fearless Los Angeles Home
This month, Decorist Celebrity designers Studio LIFE/STYLE landed the cover of Better Homes & Gardens with their studio's makeover of actress Hilary Duff's Los Angeles home. Vibrant, bold, and pattern-packed, with lots of vintage elements, the interior was everything we've come to love in their eclectic modern style—and more! Needless to say, we pored over image and were chomping at the bit to learn more about this dream project. We sat down with Studio LIFE/STYLE to get the scoop on this incredible home. Read on for our interview.
What a beautiful project! How did you become connected with Hilary Duff?
Thank you! A mutual friend and client introduced us and first met Hilary when we interviewed to remodel her home.
What were Duff's goals for her home, aesthetically and functionally? What were your goals for this project?
Luckily, all of our goals aligned, and we were able to collaborate easily. There wasn’t much back and forth, and we didn’t have to sell Hilary on any of the design aesthetic. She was in for taking risks and was able to provide her own unique and creative ideas.
What was your biggest challenge in this project and how did you address it?
Hilary sent us a picture of a wallpaper that she found and loved, but we had no idea where the wallpaper was from. We sent the photo out to all of our resources, and in the end, we were able to track it down and use it for her bedroom!
What was your inspiration for the color palette of Duff's home?
Our goal for the home was for it to look feminine and bold, yet modern and refined. We chose a very playful blue for the kitchen cabinets and paired it with bold black and white tile, and brass accents. Also, her feminine formal living room is bit glamorous, yet contemporary, with a combination of the curvy coral and gray furniture in plush fabrics/textures with added brass accents.
Duff's kitchen is one of our all-time favorites! How did you decide on that graphic tile and bold blue?
We always try to push the limits to create fresh and intriguing designs. By bouncing ideas and concepts off of each other and knowing Hilary was into taking risks, we landed on this bold kitchen aesthetic.
We love Duff's multi-rug stair runner! What's the trick to making that work?
We needed to get creative when thinking of a rug for a curving staircase, so we sewed together small kilim rugs to create a unique, one-of-a-kind runner. The key is to find three to four small rugs in a similar color scheme, so the result looks seamless and cohesive.
What's your favorite thing about Duff's home?
Too tough to pick! We had so much fun with the home, especially the formal living room and the kitchen.
What are a few ways Decorist readers can replicate the look and feel of Hilary's home?
It’s hard to say because there are a lot of unique vintage pieces in Hilary’s home. However, in general, for a DIY project, it is always quick and easy to change the aesthetic with a new coat of paint and switching out the decorative elements and textiles like throw pillows, window treatments, and rugs.
