Emerging Trend Of The Tech-Free Zone At Home

JULY 20, 2016

Emerging Trend – The Tech-Free Zone At Home

It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago, homes across the United States did not include any sort of home internet design.  Home internet setup was unheard of, as even the most advanced families perhaps had a cord running from their phone jack into a gigantic computer.  Since then, the internet has become the norm and the entire approach to setting up a home has changed radically.  Home internet design is now a central component of any living arrangement.  It’s gotten to the point where every room in just about every house has some sort of technology present, whether it’s a router, cords, a modem or any combination of these elements.  Everyone is wired, or wireless, every day and in every nook and cranny in the house.

However, that may be changing just a bit.  Some people still prefer to be able to sit and have conversations with each other without the distraction of electronic devices.  As such, several different publications out there have mentioned the growing phenomenon that is the tech-free zone.  The tech-free zone is usually in a common area, most likely the living room.  It’s something that families are beginning to enjoy in large numbers.  One of the reasons for this enjoyment is that, as hard as it is to believe for those of us who may be a bit older, young people do not know what it’s like to live in a world without Internet connectivity immediately available.  It’s a novel thing for them.

Setting Up a Room To Not Include Devices

It may sound simple to handle a home internet setup with a room that does not include technology – simply put the room together without the devices necessary to stream the internet, television or some other medium.  However, it’s not that simple.  You’ll need to decide if you want to at least allow for the capability of wireless Internet access in the room.  If so, it will affect your home internet setup in other locations in the home, as you’ll need something close enough to your tech-free zone to allow for that.

That said, you may be surprised at how open a room without any technical products can look.  Things that you simply took for granted as present are suddenly no longer there.  Other things that were rarely present, such as organic conversation, suddenly start to reappear in these spaces as well.  Some families really want to work to recapture that part of their lives together, as taking a break from all of that streaming is something some really enjoy.
