7 Dorm Room Ideas for Stylish Campus Living

When you're going off to college, living in a dorm room can be exciting and sort of scary too. And by now you probably have seen pictures of just how basic and boring your dorm room looks — and trust us, they all start out that way. For many, this will be the first time living on your own and you’ll want a space that reflects your own personal style. We know that with some help and inspiration you can transform your assigned living space into a cool and stylish home—no matter how small the square footage is, how cold-looking your brick walls feel, or how industrial your furniture and rug look, we have designer tips for transforming that bland dorm into your dream dorm.

And regardless if you are moving into a college dorm or going off-campus with your roomies, here are some fun ideas to make your space work for you. From decor, to paint, to organizing, read below for easy tricks straight from our design pros.

1. Make it your own

Let your modern personality be known with exciting additions to a drab dorm room. Swiss Cross peel & stick decals are super simple to apply on a blank wall, while graphic bedding helps make a statement. Anchor the space by laying an area rug with some visual depth to it.

2. Make your bed

Cozy up your bed for some quality sleep during all your studying. You’ll need super soft sheets (usually in XL Twin for those standard on-campus beds), a fluffy down comforter and duvet cover, and plenty of textured pillows for a spot you’ll be spending lots of time in. And make sure to choose your bedding in the same hues for easy laundering.

3. Add easy peasy wall decor

You don’t need to invest in expensive framed art to bring your walls to life in a dorm room. Try out simple string lights and pin photos or postcards throughout to help personalize them. A large tapestry is easy to hang and can fill up an empty space in a cinch.

4. Get organized. Stay organized.

A fresh start to the year calls for putting everything in its place. Wall shelves with fun brass accents and simple stacked boxes on your desktop keep items right at your fingertips and work with any design style. Look for nightstands with open compartments for easy access to books and use small photo boxes to store extra tech gear.

5. Stick to the classics

A new coat of classic Navy Blue paint can totally transform a space and will ground a bedroom that will become a hybrid sleep/work area. Pair with dark wood tones and lighthearted wall decor for a calm and focused mood.

6. Make use of extra space

You may be doubling your bedroom as a workspace, but you’ll want to do more than homework and sleep. When your room allows, add a corner chair, floor lamp and even an ottoman for additional space to sit or hang. And any extra floor space can easily become a nice change of scenery for reading by adding a floor pillow and soft rug.

7. Don’t replace, just rearrange

No need to spend loads of money on new items to make your childhood bedroom feel like a mature workspace. Move your desk near a window for some zen moments during a study session and utilize an existing bookcase or etagere to act as an organized area for a desk caddy, folders or any other school essentials.
