Designer Spotlight With Megan Moran

APRIL 7, 2017

Decorist Classic designer Megan Moran is big customer favorite and frequently gets 5-star reviews for her room designs but also making the online interior design design process fun for her clients. We caught up with Megan to ask about some of her most memorable projects and to give us a scoop on what she's loving in the design world right now.

How would you describe your design style?

My style can be described as mid-century modern.  My career in design started at the corporate offices of a high end retailer specializing in licensed products. The iconic designs of Florence Knoll, Ray and Charles Eames, and Warren Platner have always inspired me and are major influences of my overall aesthetic. I love pairing these pieces with more traditional area rugs and art to give a space an eclectic mix.

What current design trend are you most excited about this year?

Oh there are so many fun things going on this year! From the Pantone color of the year - Greenery - to lovely textures such as cut velvet. I love how our inspiration comes from the runway - bringing fashion into our homes. I'm loving the navy trend as well - it pairs so well with so many metallics for a posh vibe. Layering patterns is also so fun - whether it be in the prints of pillows and throws or the layering of different rugs - again TEXTURE. I also still love the copper trend that we saw late last year and hope it stays for 2017!

What's the biggest design mistake you see people make?

Rug size and furniture scale! Too often I see rugs that are way too small! My rule of thumb: rugs should always be large enough to rest the front two legs of your sofa and chairs on. I also see a lot of furniture that is too big for a space. It's important to draw a floor plan for scale before committing to custom pieces. If the furniture is too large it overwhelms the space - making it seem small and cluttered.

Any funny stories from your very first design project?

Oy! So many - but nothing like the senior designer throwing a stapler at me because a fabric was on backorder! True Story! (No one was hurt and we can laugh about it now).

What is your favorite piece from this project above?

I love the mix of the more traditional sofa, the glam swivel chair and gold accents. I especially love the color combination of the leather and berry - jewel tones are on trend!  This was such a fun loft to work on - they had a great art collection to help personalize their new space.
