Behind the Scene: Decorist Office Design

POSTED BY DECORIST EDITORIAL TEAM
OCTOBER 30, 2015

After designing what feels like a zillion residential and commercial spaces for our clients over the last two years, we had the opportunity to design our very own new office space, a place that would allow us to do solitary work, to collaborate, to be creative, and to have some fun.

We’d spent our first two years in startup mode, working lean and making the most of the very small two-room space. By this summer, however, we were sitting on top of each other with barely enough room to get to the restroom!  It was time to find a bigger space. We were lucky to find a larger office a short distance from our old one in the historic Presidio of San Francisco. Not only did we need our new space to showcase our office design capabilities but, also keep our hard-working team motivated and inspired each day.

To spearhead the process, we hired our own Ashley Redmond, head of design services at Decorist, who was tasked with reimagining the space from the ground-up. Because our office building has a lot of historic significance—it’s an old military headquarters—and is located in an area with very distinct Spanish-inspired architecture, we wanted to preserve and incorporate elements of each into the final design.

The finished product is a place we’re all incredibly proud to call our home. Read on to find out about how we made over our office space, then check out the full tour of the Decorist headquarters featured in Rue Magazine this week!

The Original Space

Our designer, Ashley, certainly had her work cut out for her when she began the project: flooring, wall colors, and lighting—they were horrible! As were the rows of 80's-style cubicles and walls of frosted glass. There were also original design elements that needed to be worked around, like a wall of mustard-yellow tile that had to remain in order to preserve the historic space.

The Process

After removing the carpet (and many, many layers of carpet glue), the building’s original terra cotta tile floors were restored and the walls were given a fresh coat of white paint to create a blank slate for the new design. The frosted glass had to be removed and replaced with clear glass. Our office instantly brightened up and started to feel more spacious.

The New Office

Once the foundation was laid, Ashley set about creating a Spanish-inspired space with a casual, bohemian vibe. In the entryway, for example, a large navy velvet sofa feels inviting and sophisticated, but the accents, like the pink overdyed rugs and rattan side chairs, give the space an eclectic, creative feel.

The goal in the main workspace was to create something that felt open, streamlined, and stylish, achieved by pairing clean, simple white desks from World Market with plush Moroccan shag rugs from ATG Stores.

Individual office spaces were designed with their occupant in mind. Because many of Decorist’s employees are women, for example, the company’s vice president of engineering, William, got an office with a distinctly more masculine feel. To achieve this, Ashley incorporated elements like a bentwood light fixture, a leather-and-iron armchair, and abstract artwork.

Our CEO & Founder, Gretchen Hansen’s office combines a touch of modern, vintage and eclectic all in one stunning space. We have to agree with Rue Magazine, it's a total “showstopper.”
