Outdoor Decorating Ideas

JULY 20, 2016

If you have a backyard, you most likely look for ways to maximize your use and enjoyment of it.  Every backyard is as unique as the families who live in them.  Whether you are only able to enjoy your backyard and outdoor area of your home in general for part of the year or all of the year, you have almost certainly had ideas pop into your head as to how you could improve your outdoor experience.  Decorating your outdoor online may not be something you had considered until now, but with Decorist you’ll be able to see your design ideas through to reality.  Your designer will work with you to make your outdoor space an extra living room, which is something we've done for many customers.  Here are a few things to consider:

1. Functionality First

Generally speaking, the most successful outdoor decorating projects start with what activities you see you and your family doing in this new space, and the design is created around that activity. While that might seem fairly obvious, it's an important point: if your outdoor space isn't tailored to your activity, it can be the most beautiful space and it won't be used. So for example, if you’re a barbecuing family, when you're designing the space, plan for a built-in barbecue, a pizza oven and/or a counter and sink to your outdoor area.

2. Climate Matters

If you live in a part of the country where it gets too cold in the winter to spend time outside, you’ll need to decorate in such a way that you’ll be able to bring certain items in to protect them from rain, wind, ice and snow.  Permanent fixtures in these areas may take a beating.  If you live in a warm climate, you’ll need to find items that can withstand year-round sunlight and heat.

3. Don’t Sacrifice Comfort

We have all sat in outdoor furniture that was beautiful but anything but comfortable when we sat in these pieces, and the same goes for any outdoor dining chairs, lounges and any other furniture.  While looks are obviously important, you need to make sure your furniture is comfortable.  Any one of our designers will be able to help you keep that in consideration as you redecorate your outdoor space.

4. Use Natural Features

Every backyard that’s well maintained has at least one unique feature. Perhaps it’s a small hill or a beautiful tree or a vantage point with a great view. Whatever it is, make sure you highlight what makes your outdoor space unique. Your Decorist designer will help you highlight what makes your outdoor space special and also minimize any features that you don't love.
