8 Designer Tips To Create A Beautiful Holiday Table

NOVEMBER 30, 2017

'Tis the season for celebrating and we couldn’t be more excited for those fun festive, holiday parties to start! After all it is the time of year where we all love to gather for memorable evenings complete with delicious food, great music, and dear friends and family. And once those invites have gone out, it’s time to set that beautiful tablescape.

Our Design Director Jessica McCarthy collaborated with our CEO and Founder Gretchen Hansen to dream up a stunning tabletop worth writing home about. Their inspiration was an elegant winter wonderland with moody florals, rich colors and vintage charm. The result? A lush and vivid scene worthy of any occasion you’re fêting this season, be it a holiday brunch, a wintry dinner with friends, or the stroke of midnight 2018.

Read on for 8 tips to recreate this look at home.

1. Have a theme

In order to avoid a haphazard look it helps to have a theme in mind from the onset. We wanted to create a romantic vintage look in Gretchen's dining room. Here is our pinterest board that helped us stay focused and pulled our ides together.

2. Pick a color palette

We started with a solid white table cloth as the foundation of this beautiful tablescape. We opted for rich, jewel-toned colors for a moody winter vibe. The mauve velvet placemats and pink napkins contribute to the overall seasonal feeling.

3. Go metallic

Introducing metals is always a good idea. For this dreamy scene, we broke out vintage brass candlesticks, gold bulb ornaments in a variety of finishes, hammered brass utensils, and gold-colored napkin rings with an antiqued finish. The mix is layered and dynamic.

4. Break out the china

Any sit-down dinner with friends and family is worthy of your fine china, but it’s especially appropriate during the holidays. Fine china plates and bowls bring a special polish to your table setting that feels celebratory and jewel-like. We opted for Marchesa by Lenox’s Gilded Pearl Dinnerware, which is ultra chic thanks to the hand-applied enamel and gold banding on its white bone china.

5. Set out a lush floral centerpiece

Florals can make or break a tablescape, and in this case, our floral centerpiece certainly stole the show. Dripping with plump roses, dark berries, pomegranates, greenery, and grapes, the focal point had a moody, forest-like feel. Gather inspiration and show your florist or go wild at the farmer’s market for an opulent, overflowing look. For vases use brass vessels or family heirlooms for that personal touch.

6. Create different heights

We used a combination of tall and short brass candle sticks and stacked vintage books to create varying heights. The two flower arrangments also added dimension.

7. Utilize unique placecards

We always love including a personal element in a tablescape, and placecards are such a fun way to make people feel special.  The more unique, the better. Here we used marble coasters and had them tailor made for each guest. And not to mention, they make great party favors as well!

8. Indulge the sweet tooth

Nothing finishes off a celebratory tablescape like a smattering of decadent desserts set atop beautiful cake plates. We called in our favorite patisserie for a coconut-covered cake accented with flowers, black-and-white whoopie pies, and pastel macarons for a French touch.
