7 Paint Trends That Will Transform Your Home

OCTOBER 24, 2016

With the weather changing and the seasonal chill setting in, we can’t help but want to cozy-up the interiors of our home. Of course, an easy and affordable fix can be in the form of a fresh coat of paint.  Our designers get lots of questions about paint.  Everyone wants to know our favorite paint colors, what's trending (gloss paint? flat? bold colors?) or simply the best paint color to create a particular look.

Whether you want to refresh your room for Fall or perhaps you've recently moved, choosing the right paint can be daunting given the overwhelming number of color choices, finishes and brands.

And in the spirit of Benjamin Moore's recent announcement — 2017 Color of the Year "Shadow" — we turned to our own highly talented Decorist Elite Designers to ask them to share some of their favorite paint ideas and brands.

James Wheeler

“We were inspired by the spirit of a gentleman’s library for this master bedroom, and chose Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue for the walls. It’s a modern hue that lends a masculine feel throughout the space, while infusing a touch of unexpected boldness. We furnished the space with dark woods to further enhance the sense of masculinity, and particularly love how the custom headboard with a leather insert, vintage ashtrays and heirloom cuckoo clock pair with the color."

Noz Nozawa

"I absolutely love using fully saturated colors throughout a room, and by mixing jewel tones with earth tones, you can create a room that pops without it feeling like it's too much. Benjamin Moore's Clinton Brown is a great medium-dark brown with cooler undertones, which made it a gorgeous base color for the rich blues and yellows in this room design."

Simone Howell

"The dining room is a great place to add a bit of drama to your home and paint is a great place to start. Our dining room is one of the first rooms you see when entering our house and the dark walls certainly set the stage for what's to come. The walls feel bold and dramatic which creates a fabulous juxtaposition to the earthy Moroccan shag rug. Paint color is Valspar Dark Kettle Black."

Heather Garrett

"Establishing a purpose for a room before deciding on paint can help guide you in the right direction.  Whether relaxed or formal, it’s important to select a color that enhances the intended mood for the space while providing a complementary backdrop for the pieces that will fill it.  For this living room, I wanted a color that would emphasize the layered textures and earthy tones within the furnishings, but neutral enough to make the turquoise accents pop.  Sherwin Williams Nomadic Desert has a rich golden hue that warms up the entire room, making it feel luxurious yet very inviting.

Anna Smith

"Paint has one of the most dramatic impacts on a space and can totally transform the mood of a room.  It's also one of the most challenging elements to get right. A good, clean white works in most spaces and will never go out of style, but sometimes I like to go bold in smaller areas like in this kitchen island or on the back of a bookshelf. In my kitchen, the walls are Benjamin Moore Simply White and island is Benjamin Moore Cushing Green."

Noz Nozawa

"I love painting bedrooms darker because it makes them cozier and more den-like. Benjamin Moore's Old Navy is one of my favorites – it strikes the perfect balance between being sophisticated and restrained but still saturated and blue enough. I loved this color so much that I even removed the backs of the bookcases so that the wall color would become a part of the casework."

Benjamin Moore's 2017 Color of the Year—Shadow

Last week Benjamin Moore announced its 2017 Color of the Year — Shadow, a deep, bold saturated purple. “Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance. It's a color that calls to mind a ‘past,’ yet it can also make a contemporary, color-confident statement,” Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore’s creative director, said in the announcement. "After a year of looking at white, we were looking for something with more feeling,"
